Our final 5 were Balthazar King, Monbeg Dude, Chance du Roy, Lion Na Bernai and Raz de Maree. So surely we shall back these 5. Wait. Hold on. I’m not too sure. There is something nagging me in the back of my mind about a couple of these. Didn’t we back Balthazar last year? Didn’t he fade tamely from Bechers 2nd time around? Well indeed he did. And I believe conditions will be the same today as they were last year, so I’m afraid Mr Johnson, we are going to cut you from the list.<\/p>\n
So we’re backing the other 4 right? Wrong. One more thing that has nagged me is the form after December of Monbeg Dude. This horse has had 17 runs and won 4 of them, not a bad return. However since the turn of the year in the past 4 seasons, he has run 6 times and only won once and that was a rearranged Welsh National that should have been run in December. I am just not sure this horse is a Spring horse. He seems much happier to me when the mud is flying and it’s freezing outside. Unlike me, who loves the warm spring sun, sipping champagne and eating strawberries with TGL. So goodbye Dude!<\/p>\n
So the final 3 are Chance du Roy, Lion Na Bernai and Raz de Maree. All fitting the stats and all with wins in Feb\/March and or April. In other words horses who are comfortable at this time of year and who have been prepared for the race.
