Plenty of appeal

Lady Luck seems to have gone missing in the past couple of weeks and we have had to grin and bear it. But we live to fight another day and today we should get back on track.

Firstly, the Spring Mile, 3.30 at Newbury. Now once again, we have a massive field and we will have no idea about the draw. So I suggest we back one drawn high and one drawn low.

One Word More returns for another crack at a big 1m handicap and let’s hope it manages to actually start the race today, as with Mr. Buick on board, it will have agreat chance in this race. I also like Charles Camoin in this. He goes particularly well fresh and the drop back in trip should suit him. He hasn’t run over 1m since 2012 but when he did run he ran second to a horse now rated in the the low 100s. As his mark is still 90, he looks an ideal second choice.

The only other race I’m interested in today is the Scottish Grand National, 3.50 at Ayr. A great race to watch as all the Nationals are, and this year it has a very lopsided look about it with old Tidal Bay running. Most of the field are carrying more than they should be and the handicap looks crazy. I think it is wide open and there are about a dozen horses you could fancy to win. I’ll throw a couple of arrows and hope I hit the bullseye.

Midnight Appeal has long been on my radar for this after his staying on 5th in the Racing Post at Kempton. His trainer won this last year and he has recently stated that this has been the target for Midnight Appeal all season. That’ll do for me cocker! Secondly and this is just a shot in the dark I admit, Sole Witness. The trainer has a decent record here and the jockey has won on both his rides, so they can clearly line one up. He has no decent staying chase form and isn’t guaranteed to get round but at a massive price, have a go!.
