Ayr Gold Cup – Be my Guest

By | September 19, 2014

It’s the second biggest day of racing North of the Border, with the Ayr Gold Cup taking place. I’m all over this race and have got us an absolute beauty. The clue is in the title of today’s post and the horse is Heaven’s Guest, so I’ll say again, in the Ayr Gold Cup, be my guest and grab yourself a little piece of Heaven!

Last season, Heaven’s Guest ran 4th in this race, which for a 3yo was a monumental effort. Now a year older and with 2 big handicap wins under his belt, he arrives bigger, better, faster, stronger and much better equipped to cope with this race. I would have liked to have seen a drop of rain if I’m honest, but I can still recall the willing attitude he showed to beat the very fast Moviesta on good to firm going at Newmarket last season. His best performance this season came with give underfoot in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket early in July but he looks to be able to cope with faster ground once a season and today should be the day.

The icing on the cake for him came on Thursday when it was announced that he had a draw in the twenties. Last season he was drawn in 16 which was a terrible draw. All the horses, over the 2 days, in big field sprints, that were isolated up the centre of the course, struggled. Why that was I couldn’t say, but the likes of Heaven’s Guest and Baccarat couldn’t get a blow in. There will be no excuses today.

All in all I’m really looking forward to a bold showing from Heavens Guest. So that’s the Ayr Gold Cup sorted, onto the Silver Cup.

I’ll keep this simple. A horse who has good course form, has form over 6f and 7f, has a high draw, likes to be prominent and trained by a good trainer. Majestic Moon. End of.

One horse who I’ve been waiting to run is Air Pilot. I watched him chase home Farraaj at Epsom the day before the Derby and thought Cambridgeshire. However, as he hasn’t been seen since, his handicap mark is unlikely to be high enough to get a run in the Cambridgeshire, but that doesn’t mean he can’t grab a big pot before the end of the season. I believe that pot will be found at Newbury today. This horse clearly has problems but is also clearly a talent. The best is yet to come and we should see him start to fulfill his potential today. Get on board with the Air Pilot.

Finally a quick mention to TGL who is due to have my fourth born any day. Get a move on will ya love!
