It’s the Cambridgeshire Handicap this weekend and I think we shall see a case of more O’Meara magic! David O’Meara is a man rapidly moving up the trainer ranks as his recent big race wins with Out Do, G Force and Louis The Pious, have shown. This guy can prepare them for the big day, down to every last detail. 2 of those winners had visors fitted for the first time to help them concentrate and it is this level of preparation that makes O’Meara a man to have on your side.
So onto the Cambridgeshire. Last week I tipped Air Pilot, who duly dotted up at Newbury and stated that I had had the Cambridgeshire in my mind for this horse since June. My worry was that he wouldn’t get in. Now at the 5 day decs part, he still has to have 14 horses come out to ensure he gets a run. That may happen but I’d rather be on a horse that is already in the race and guaranteed to run at this stage.
Horses who have proven form in big fields over straight courses should always be at the top of your list when contemplating this race. Last season, Ingleby Angel came to life in this part of the calendar year and reeled off 3 wins on the spin. The most important of those was a win in the Straight Mile Championship at Redcar, a class 2 worth £12,000 with a field of 17 runners. He needed all of that mile to get up and I still can’t believe he actually won, if you watch the replay, you will see what I mean. Although those 3 wins did come on fast ground, he also has 2 wins to his name on soft and ran really well on good ground, when an excellent 2nd in the Thirsk Hunt Cup, earlier in the season. All in all, this horse isn’t ground dependent, loves a battle and is trained by an up and coming trainer.
This adds up to a corking ew ante post bet to me.
