Feast or Famine

By | September 11, 2013

“Feast or famine with you,” The Good Lady tells me on a weekend, “we either eat Steak and drink Champagne as you’ve had a good Saturday or we’re suffering from the Gump effect!” And people you know how that works. Anyway I’m hitting the ground running for tomorrow with 6 beauties for us to get our teeth in to.

But before we get on to the horses, I had a conversation with Helmet regarding Celebrity Big Brother – I know, but why not?- and he is convinced that Lauren is the best value to win. You see that’s why we call him Helmet! Anyway if you’re interested in that sort of thing then check out the prices from our selected bookmakers.

Right, down to buisness. I’ve been in touch with Tony the Bookie and told him to get the wheelbarrow ready or just to hand me the keys to the shop because I’m gonna clean up on Saturday. I had to hang the phone up as the sound of his laughter became too loud!

At Haydock, I really fancy Rocky Ground with R. Moore booked to ride for R. Varian. These two have a very respectable record when teaming up, add to that the fact that the horse is wearing a hood for the first time (and not because it’s meant to be raining) and it makes this horse a really interesting bet. Tawhid was unlucky in the Jersey and has run with credit since and the booking of G. Mosse (Geraldine as Gump calls him) and the forecast rain, makes him an appealing bet. In the big sprint, if the rain arrives in force then Gordon Lord Byron would make a lot of appeal due to his 2nd last year and his good run at York behind Lethal Force when drawn away from the action.

At Ascot, Gabriels Lad is a horse that looks to be improving and capable of winning some decent prizes in the coming months over 6 and 7 furlongs, whilst Gabbiano has 2 wins and a 2nd here and that gives him an excellent chance in the last.

As a regular weekend feature, I’ll be using statistics to give an analysis of a major Saturday handicap. This week I’m focussing on the Old Borough Cup at Haydock a race that has been upgrade from a Class 3 to a Class 2 Handicap in recent times.

I’ve got 6 stats that will help us to find the ideal candidate. 1 – horse aged 3-5; 2 – rated 90 plus; 3 – has won a class 3 race or better this year; 4 – has already won over 12f – 14f; 5 – ran 4-7 times this season; 6 – finished in the first 4 last time out.

Step forward Semeen! Another positive is the fact his trainer Luca Cumani has sent out a winner and a 2nd in this race in the last 5 years. R. Hughes the Champion jockey is booked and all looks set for a good run. Why not take advantage of the Channel 4 offers from our featured bookie of the month bet365?

Now in order for The Good Lady to get her Steak and Champers dinner we need to avoid being Gumped, fingers crossed people.

Yours in sport, The General.
