Tony the Bookie likes to think of himself as a Karaoke buff. Anytime we’re out and about, he will pick up the mic and slaughter any number of songs. His favourite tune to massacre is Teenage Kicks by The Undertones. Think of an even more monotone version of it than the original and you get the picture.
Now there are some advantages to his musical side however. If he sees a horse with a name that belongs in a song, he will back it and then sing it, which if you’re winning is fine. One day we were at Newmarket when Race for the Stars won. Of course Tony being an S Club fan confused this horse for Reach for the Stars and continued singing the wrong words all day, but as we’d won, no-one cared! On the same card Blue Monday won the Cambridgeshire. Now for anyone who can remember this, Blue Monday was the biggest selling 12 inch in history. For those who think a 12 inch is a sex toy, it’s not, although with the words, “how does it feel” starting it off, maybe New Order were trying to tell us something. Anyway, more of Tony later.
Down to business. Our old friend Doc Hay won the 1.30pm at Ascot last year. He comes here in great form following his unlucky run in the Portland and a good win at Ripon last week. Course and distance suit him fine and the wet weather has eased the ground perfectly for him. I’m expecting a repeat performance, so take the 7s with any of BetVictor, William Hill or Skybet.
Later on at 3.50pm I fancy Heavens Guest to run a massive race. This horse has had no luck with the draw in it’s last 2 runs but yet still performed admirably in the Ayr Gold Cup, finishing 4th. With better luck he would have won. The ground is perfect for him, he has won over 7f and runs his best races in big fields. The 16s available is an ew steal. Sunday sees the Arc at Longchamp and after careful consideration and lots of studying, I have concluded that the best bet is the Epsom Derby winner Ruler of the World. This horse has improved all year, headed in and out of the Derby as an unbeaten colt and then encountered the fastest gorund he has ran on when flopping in the Irish Derby. After a nice break, he returned with an unlucky 2nd in the Prix Niel. He will like the ground, will stay the trip, will be suited by a fast run race and has R. Moore booked. He is available at an ever shrinking 11s with Skybet.
