The Premier League gives way to internationals

By | October 8, 2013

There is no Premier League action this weekend as we have to put up with England and the other home nations doing very poor impersonations of international football teams.

Before we say more about how dreadful England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are, let’s just have a very quick recap on the current Premier League standings.

When action resumes on the 19th October Arsenal will be top of the table, ahead of Liverpool by virtue of goals scored. Southampton are in fourth and Man United’s win over Sunderland sees them scrape into the top half.

This season the title looks sure to be won with a record low points total, lowly West Ham’s remarkable 3-0 win at Spurs the latest indication that the gap between the top and bottom of the table is smaller than ever.

City remain favourites for the title but we think this one is too close to call, with six teams who will all claim they have got what it takes and even a few Everton and Southampton fans who may dare to dream.

Dreaming is probably about as good as it will get for England fans should the Three Lions fail to beat Montenegro – population 700,000 – on Friday night. Victory, and again on Tuesday at home to Poland, would see Roy’s boys on the way to Brazil but given they are yet to beat a “real” team in the whole campaign don’t hold your breath.

Normally this would be a decent time for the rest of the home countries to have a good laugh at England but with Wales ranked 52nd in the world, Scotland 63rd and Northern Ireland 86th, perhaps they would be better to focus on themselves.

Oh, and unrelated to all of that, the next person who tells me, as if they have just invented a cure for world poverty and are the only person to have such a thought, that “Belgium could be a dark horse in Brazil you know mate”, will get a stiff jab to the nose. 18/1 with Winner if you fancy it by the way!
