We may be on the ropes but like Muhammed Ali in the Thriller in Manilla, we are waiting to apply the rope a dope tactic and hit the bookies with a KO punch. Well that’s the theory and it is Gold Cup Day so we have no chance after this do we!
The Triumph hurdle is easy, Beltor. This horse travels like the wrath of God in it’s hurdle races but then quickens up like Flash Gordon. It handles soft ground, and there is plenty of rain forecast, the likely strong pace should help it settle and the trainer continues in good form. Please form an orderly queue.
The County Hurdle is a doddle. Baltimore Rock. D. Pipe is having a good festival with horses laid out for it, Moon Racer, The Package and Monetaire all running well off the back of a long time off. Here is horse who was highly progressive last season culminating in a good win at Sandown. He disappointed first time out in a muddling Greatwood here but the pace is much more likely to suit him in this.
It’s not very often we put up a Hunter Chaser on here, but my man on the inside has told me that Chosen Milan cannot be missed at a huge price, having been aimed here since her win over the course last April. Enough said.
The Martin Pipe hurdle usually goes to Gigginstown and this year should be no different with Roi Des Francs representing. This day just gets easier doesn’t it?
To round things off I suggest that we get involved with Chris Pea Green. This horse jumps ok for a novice and his best hurdle races were in big fields such as this. I can see a big improvement on his previous chase form now that he gets some cover, soft ground (if it rains) and a strong pace to run at.
Finally, you may notice I haven’t put up a selection for the Gold Cup. That’s because no matter which way I look at it, I can’t find a way in to the race. I have, in no particular order, been keen on, Many Clouds, Road to Riches, Sam Winner, Lord Windermere, Djakadam and Holywell. but I can’t nail myself down to a real fancy. Therefore I am going to give it a swerve and enjoy the spectacle of a fascinating race.
